The battle lines have been drawn yet again, on ground that separates the march of so-called economic progress via mining from the sanctity and conservation of age-old ecosystems. Recently those lines were etched literally by the blood of Armin Marin, local official and environmental advocate, in the foothills of Mt. Guiting-guiting in pristine Sibuyan Island, Romblon province. Marin was gunned down as he led a group of protesters against the Sibuyan Nickel Properties Inc and its increasing exploration activities for nickel mining.
