Blackout grips Puerto Princesa on election day

October 29, 2007

You’ve gotta believe this one.

Early dawn of Monday, election day for Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan nationwide, the highly urbanized City of Puerto Princesa and most of the municipalities further south of the Province plunges into a total power blackout.

It was enough to raise an alarm for Congressman Baham Mitra, who immediately texted NPC Small Power Utilities Group Vice President Lorenzo Marcelo to demand an explanation.

It turns out that a lowly forest gecko had tripped a power cable at Napocor’s main facility in Barangay Irawan and brought down the whole system. Mitra received the following reply message, as power was restored after about an hour.

“Just confirmed from the Irawan Sub Station tripping due to short circuit caused by “tuko”… we have redirected our lightings (sic) to avoid same incident in the future. Good day sir.”

Imagine what this animal can do to New York city.
